My True Friend

Mavis Lang

She comes without calling
is loyal and never judgemental.
Some days she walks ahead
other times she follows,
quiet and accepting; she goes
with me anywhere I choose.

She knows my past,
my travels, my lovers
we share the same interests,
bushwalking, tennis, cycling –
she’s always there with me, egging me on.
But she goes to bed earlier than me
and tends to stay home in cold weather.
Like the stars in daylight,
even if she’s absent,
I know she will return.

Although she lacks initiative
and has no friends of her own,
I love the way we wear the same hairdos
the same styles of fashion…Imitation
is the sincerest form of flattery, they say.
She’s walked many miles in my shoes
and knows my secrets but doesn’t tell –
my sister, my twin – my shadow.

A Walk Together

Bernie Anderson

While you take small, arthritic steps
around the backyard,
my blue and white sneakers lead
me to ever-green George Street Park.
I stumble over rocks bordering waterless pond,
walk circles under the giant red gums,
filling my pockets with woody gum nuts,
clusters of white, fluffy flowers
of citrus scented lemon myrtle.
I follow a border collie’s prints
left from night’s rain.
Further on I stop at the rail line
watching parents and prams, bicycles, scooters
bridge the uneven crossing.
Stand under she-oak’s lowly branches,
ensconced in a moment of night,
watch rosellas squeak and squawk
as they play amongst
bottle brush flowers, like mums’ old hair curlers.
Home now, I come to you
sitting on the back lawn,
head resting on
white- tipped paws
and, as you sniff my shoes,
pockets and grubby hands,
we take a walk together.

Sunset After a Dust Storm

Jules Leigh Koch

the twilight sky
is a burnt orange
with sandpaper rough
edges
broken pieces
of cloud
are wedged
together
in watermelon red
and caramel
the texture
of terracotta
between are rays
of sunlight
on bright linen
stilts
teeming down
onto
a horizon line
tightrope
the bleached yellow
sun
has just slipped
off
