The secret is out and so are the “Wonderful Women of Wisdom” otherwise know as the WOW Group operating out of the MOSHCC in Milang.
What a privilege it has been, to facilitate the WOW trips this year. The support and enthusiasm shown by the regular WOW ladies has been enlightening, humbling and extremely contagious. Reconnections, new introductions, and everything in between, never a dull moment and certainly loads of fun!
A huge shout out, to the dedicated people who have created this outlet for the women living in and around the Milang Community and District. Special mention to past facilitators, Di Horrocks and Cheryl Butlin, whom I both know and have drawn on for inspiration. Apologies if I have missed anyone who has facilitated in the past also- THANK YOU!
So, WHAT do the WOW ladies do, WHERE have they been and WHERE to next you ask?
Mad March saw the group travelling to the South Coast to Inman Valley to experience the sweetness of a delectable Belgium Waffle, lovingly prepared by the Staff of Belicious Café. Nestled in the picturesque surrounds of Glacier Rock. If you have not been there, we would recommend a visit.
Visiting the South Coast Op Shops, also proving a favourable choice and pre-loved items finding their way back on the bus.
Its fair to say I now know who the sweet tooths of the Group are, June and Reen!
April saw the Group switch it up a bit, visiting the famous Auchendarroch House, where we enjoyed a lovely meal, overlooking the immaculate gardens and grounds of this stately building. Followed by the viewing of, what, some, may say, a controversial movie, “Wicked Little Letters.” Not to everyone’s taste unfortunately, funny in parts, poignant in others and excessive use of colourful language taking away from the storyline. Let’s just say it was an experience one will never forget.
A Breather for May and June soon around the corner, we loaded up the bus and headed to Hindmarsh Island, traveling via Clayton Bay, completing the loop of the old and new parts of the township it was quite a surprise to some to see the growth and development of the township, not previously seen.
Through to Goolwa, over the Bridge and embarking on and exploring every inch of the Island. Walking the sands at the Murray Mouth situated in the Coorong National Park.
Cruising the winding bitumen of the man-made waterways and marina. Show casing the mansions and yachts a contrasting spectacle, arriving at our destination,” Islanders Tavern.” Keen to refuel and the opportunity, to indulge in a new culinary delight, a starter for all to share, being a baked feta dish with Mediterranean condiments. A thumbs up by the table on completion of the dish.
After lunch down to the Goolwa Barrages, for a history lesson where we learnt the purpose of and the importance of these structures, working across the entire, River and Lakes system.
Initial commencement of works starting in December 1934 and works finally completed in February 1940. Unknown to us, we were provided a show, put on by a local sealion who was clearly expecting us! This created banter and laughter amongst the group, before making our way to “Middleton Chocolates and Ice cream,” being a request from one of our WOW ladies, not saying any names! Needless, to say, they did not disappoint!
Homeward bound we, deviated slightly at Currency Creek, traveling down towards Ballastone Estate looking for the remnants of a Cemetery, much, to the delight of Denise. Partially successful, meeting a lovely landowner of the area assisting with our search, but not with the outcome we had set out for. Denise days later providing valuable pictures and transcript of the area, Thank you Denise!
July saw the WOW ladies immerse themselves in some of the exceptional Arts and Culture South Australia continues to deliver up and is celebrated for, visiting the Illuminate Festival, attending, “Eden”, an interactive and brightly coloured experience to test the senses based in Light Square, Adelaide. A short walk away ducking into the “West Oak Hotel” for a quick Schnitty, that hit the spot and lastly rounding out our Artistic day by visiting the famous “Jam Factory” to view glass blowing and admiring the talents of skilled Artists, work in their gift shop.
