The busy cafeteria section of the Milang Historic Railway Museum is operated every Sunday by a volunteer team who undertake a range of tasks to ensure the customers enjoy good service and quality café food and beverages.
A highly valued member of the railway cafeteria volunteer team, on duty every Sunday from 12 noon until 4 pm, is a quiet young lady named Jemmison. Known affectionately to her volunteer colleagues as “Jem”, the young volunteer is being mentored and trained by the very experienced Norma Faulkner.
Jem lives on a four-hectare property located between Strathalbyn and Milang. She shares the expansive home and land with her parents and many dogs, cats, and chickens. Jem’s supportive mother brings her to the cafeteria every Sunday and picks her up when it closes after a busy day.
Jem has a disability and is delighted to have an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a busy working environment under the watchful eye of her mentor, Norma. She helps the cafeteria operate efficiently by first checking that tables are clean, set properly with menus, coasters and napkins. She particularly enjoys delivering customer orders to tables.
When asked why she enjoys volunteering at the railway museum cafeteria, Jem explained that she has fun while learning how to do things and that the other volunteers are very friendly and helpful.
