Milang Community Garden – Newsletter – April 2025

The garden has been abuzz with activity, preparing the beds for the new season’s crops. Lots of mucking in, digging over soil, spreading manure, sowing seeds, plating seedlings, covering beds and watering! The new babies are already popping up through soil! The hot weather and dryness have been a challenge, even with the now extensive irrigation system.
We look forward to the Autumn/ Winter veggies like rhubarb, carrots, pumpkins, beetroot, kohl rabi and so much more! If you like hot spicy food, there are two large, and constantly productive Chilli bushes covered in ripening fruit.

Our gardeners have over time experimented with flowers and native plants, some of which have done very well. These help to bring in birds, bees and other beneficial insects.
The orchard keeps on giving with lots of apples and pears all coming in at once! There have been hundreds of big green granny smith apples coming off the tree. If you like baking there may still be some available as we move into April! The quinces are the next to ripen with plenty on the tree, despite its leaves looking a bit daggy thanks to a cherry worm!

Our white feathered friends have also settled into the garden, religiously trimming the trees overhead, providing a carpet of eucalyptus mulch and fertiliser over plants and people alike! They love entertaining us with their constant chatter and acrobatic antics above our heads! Maybe the rains up north may encourage them to migrate back from whence they came!

Feathered Friends

The light and air are softening with calming Autumn hues as we look forward to some cooler conditions in which to enjoy the garden.  Hopefully there will be some rain along the way!

As always, we love for people to pop in to see what is on ‘the menu’ or just to have a chat and enjoy the green space.
