Storm Power

Susan Thrun Willett

Wind whistles through hollow logs

where sugar gliders hide for shelter
swirls dry bush debris and leaf mould
disturbing an earthy odour of decay
now drawn into its hungry wake.
Eucalypt branches bend
like stooped old men
leaves tremble, some fall
as a discordant rustle
menaces the forest crown.
Savanna grass flattens
buffeted by savage assault
bearing the burden
of potent strength and force
and power lines hum in the air.
A needle-sharp deluge
fuels the rising river
its once glassy surface
whirled by brute-power and ferocity
shaped by the beast’s embrace.
Wood creaks, rain drums on glass
resisting the rage of the predator
repelling violent energy
as children cower under quilts.
Dogs bay into the darkness
as jagged dragon-fire flashes
and the creature rumbles an echo
with thunderous portent.
*
Morning clouds suffuse silver glimmer
the monster’s fury spent
soothing sounds of chirping crickets
the sigh of dripping leaves on trees
the ripple of water slipping through rocks
bring tranquil silence to calm the soul.
And stillness settles like a long-held breath.

The Sea is Calm Tonight

Valma Aylesbury

The sea is calm tonight

And the stars are shining bright.
Hopefully tomorrow will be
Peaceful, warm and sunny.
Now the winter chill has gone
It’s time to put summer gear on
Grab our togs and bathers too
To go out swimming feeling new.
When the sea is calm tonight
We know the sailors are alright
Out on the sea a fishing so neat
Bringing in their catch for all to eat.
When days are full of warm sunshine
We can sit outside and dine
Watching the scenery in twilight
Seeing the sea so calm tonight.
After a storm when strong winds blow
People’s morale is often low
But when the sea is calm at night
We know that all will be alright.

Holy Trinity Church on a Rainy Day

Jules Leigh Koch

rain can’t wash
the graffiti off
the church wall
nor wipe bright
the stained-glass windows
nor
flush out pigeons
in the loft
nor
cleanse the grief
of the elderly woman
dressed in black
crossing herself with holy water
inside the church entrance
